Death Notefollows Light Yagami, a brilliant but disillusioned high school student in Japan. His life changes dramatically when he finds a mysterious notebook, the "Death Note", left behind by Ryuk, a bored shinigami (god of death). With this book, Light can kill anyone simply by writing their name in it, as long as he knows their face.
Faced with this supernatural power, Light decides to cleanse the world of criminals and thus create a new, just society over which he aims to rule as a god-like figure. However, his actions quickly attract the attention of the authorities and the brilliant but mysterious detective L. What follows is a nerve-wracking cat-and-mouse game between Light and L, with both trying to uncover the other's true identity without being unmasked themselves.
