Date A Liverevolves around Shido Itsuka, a seemingly ordinary high school student who one day becomes involved in a disastrous event: a so-called “spacequake” that destroys his city. During this chaos, he meets a mysterious girl, Tohka, who turns out to be a “Spirit”—a supernatural being whose presence causes catastrophic disasters.

Shido soon discovers that there are multiple Spirits who, unintentionally, endanger the world. Instead of fighting these Spirits with violence, Shido receives an unexpected assignment from his sister Kotori and the secret organization Ratatoskr: he must take the Spirits on a date and win their hearts. Only by winning their love can he neutralize their powers and save the world.

As Shido meets more and more Spirits—each with their own unique personalities, powers, and problems—he is confronted with bizarre, comical, and sometimes dangerous situations, and must deal with rival organizations that have different plans for the Spirits.
