Tokyo Ghoulis set in a dark Tokyo where people live in fear of ghouls—creatures that hide among the population and can only survive by eating human flesh. The story follows Ken Kaneki, a shy college student whose life changes dramatically after a date with the mysterious Rize, who turns out to be a ghoul. After a near-fatal attack, Kaneki is saved by a surgery in which parts of Rize's body are transplanted into him, transforming him into a half-ghoul. Kaneki must now balance his humanity with his newfound, dangerous hunger as he tries to find his place among humans and ghouls. With the help of the ghouls of Café Anteiku, he learns to survive but finds himself increasingly entangled in the battle between ghouls and the humans who hunt them.
